Our students are fortunate to have so many options to learn about and use technology in the classroom. iPads, Chromebooks and a computer lab are available for elementary students. Middle School and High School students each have a laptop or chromebook they are given at the start of the year and are able to take home nightly. Our students learn keyboarding, computer skills and digital citizenship. In addition higher level classes are taught via Telepresence with other districts.
Hour of Code
December 5 - 9 was Computer Science Education Week. It marks the 3rd Anniversary of the Hour of Code, which is a movement to introduce students to Computer Science. Monticello Students 4th & 5th grades participated in a Minecraft Hour of Code. Using simple commands students learned to program animals and other creatures to move, pickup and drop items and a variety of other actions normally used in Minecraft. Creating their own game required critical thinking, strategic planning, evaluating information, problem solving and learning to accept failure and get over it quickly. Students were very willing to help one another and share their reasoning for how they made their game work. Students were not afraid to try something and then move on if it didn’t work. They were determined to get their version of Minecraft to work, but most of all they had fun trying!
