A Safety Message from Mr. Brokopp
March 26, 2026
Reunification Drill — Completed Successfully
Dear Monticello School District Families and Community Members,
We are proud to share that this morning, Monticello School District successfully completed our first full Reunification Drill — and we could not be more pleased with how our staff and students performed.
Today’s drill represents the final step in a multi-year commitment by our Safety Team to build a complete, practiced, and confident emergency preparedness program. This work did not happen overnight. Over the past several years, our staff has participated in lockdown drills, law enforcement-led classroom release drills, and dedicated In-Service training sessions each school year. We have invested significant time and energy preparing for crises that we pray will never occur — because we believe that preparation is the greatest gift we can give our students and families.
Reunification — the process of safely returning students to their families following an emergency — was the final piece of that puzzle. As many in our region witnessed following incidents in communities like Mount Horeb and Madison, the reunification process can be chaotic and deeply stressful for families when it has not been planned and practiced in advance. We took note. We were determined that if Monticello School District ever faced a situation requiring reunification, our families would experience a process that is calm, organized, and as reassuring as possible under any circumstances.
Today, we can confidently say that we are prepared. We have a designated reunification site, all necessary materials and documentation staged and ready, clearly defined staff roles, and — most importantly — a team that has now walked through every step of the process firsthand. Our staff and students practiced the full reunification flow this morning alongside law enforcement partners from Monticello, New Glarus, and Green County, and the results exceeded our expectations.
We feel very confident in where our safety program stands today. We also understand that preparedness is not a destination — it is a practice. We are committed to continuing to rehearse and refine these steps each school year, so that our readiness never fades and our families can always count on us.
Our students are our most precious responsibility. Everything we do in the area of safety — every drill, every training, every plan — is done with them in mind. Thank you for your continued trust and support as we work to ensure that Monticello remains a safe and welcoming place to learn and grow.
With gratitude and pride,
Monticello School District Administration & Safety Team

👀You will likely see a significant police presence and multiple emergency vehicles staged along East Lake Ave. We want to emphasize that this is a planned training exercise only. There is no cause for concern for our students, staff, or neighbors. These drills are a routine part of our commitment to maintaining a safe and prepared school environment.
💙We appreciate your cooperation as we work with local law enforcement to ensure our safety protocols remain current and effective.

For middle school career day 6th graders worked on activities that taught them career "soft skills" like teamwork🤝, critical thinking🧠, and time management🕰️.

👟Tonight our track team travels to UW-Platteville! Good luck!

🥎Our softball team travels to Johnson Creek tonight! Good luck girls!

🤓For middle school career day, the 7th graders had the opportunity to listen to volunteer speakers from a personal chef to an aeronautical engineer to a plumbing apprentice and more... 💙Thank you to our speakers for taking time out of their day!

Dear Parents, Guardians and Community Members,
Letting you all know that tomorrow morning, Thursday, March 26, our students and staff will be participating in a scheduled Reunification Drill.
We want to ensure you are aware of the timeline so there is no cause for concern:
▪️9:30 AM: Students and staff will be walking from the school to our reunification site.
▪️Emergency Presence: You will likely notice a significant police presence and multiple emergency vehicles from Monticello, New Glarus, and Green County staged along East Lake Avenue.
▪️Purpose: This is a planned training exercise only. It is a routine part of our commitment to keeping our school safe and prepared.
▪️10:30 AM: The drill is expected to conclude, and students will return to their normal school schedule.
These drills allow us to practice safely returning students to their families in the event of an emergency. We have been preparing for this for a long time, and we are looking forward to a productive morning of practice with our local law enforcement partners.
We will follow up with a communication email once the drill is complete. Thank you for your continued support in keeping our students safe.
